ImageHow important is the use of a maternity bra? Gloss finds out when, why and what you need in the way of maternity bras…

As soon as you conceive your body begins to go through a huge range of changes. One of the very first indications of pregnancy can be an increase of breast size, tenderness or some sort of breast change.

Breasts change
As your pregnancy progresses, your breasts continue to grow. Your milk glands begin to ready themselves to produce milk.

It can be tempting to just buy a bigger bra as your breasts change but bra manufacturers strongly advise you use maternity bras as these are designed to give breast support during pregnancy. Maternity bras are also able to be used as breastfeeding bras as they have special fasteners allowing you to drop down a cup to expose your nipple for the baby.

Most people notice a significant difference in breast shape and size after the fourth or fifth months. If you get a bra fitted at this stage, you will probably need another fitting closer to the seventh and eighth month as well as they will only grow bigger!

In the earlier stages of pregnancy the bra should feel best fastened on the tightest hooks, which allows you to loosen it as you grow a little bigger. The cup needs to have a little growing room. If you can slide your hand into it comfortably while wearing it is probably the correct size.

It is not recommended that you wear an underwire bra as it can damage the fragile beast tissue during pregnancy. A soft cup gives your breasts less restrictions and still provides enough support. If it feels comfortable, it is a good idea to wear your maternity bra while sleeping.

You should plan to purchase at least two maternity bras during pregnancy, and then increase this as required after you begin to breastfeed. This is due to the increased need to wash your bras after your milk comes in. Handwashing your bras works best.

Even if you do not plan to breastfeed, you should still wear a maternity bra for at least six weeks after the birth. Contrary to popular belief it is not breastfeeding that impacts breast shape but pregnancy. Looking after breast tissue by wearing the appropriate type of bra will help your breasts retain a good shape.
