ImageYou've raised your own kids, and now you have grandchildren. With all the experience tucked under your belt you should be a wealth of advice and information for the raising of these bundles of joy, right? Right, except that the number one tip for being a terrific grandmother is to lay low on the advice until you are asked for it...

Sure, offer tidbits here and there, but wait until you know your opinion is wanted. You don't want to undermine the confidence of new parents. If you give them enough space, and then give them good answers when they do ask, they will begin to turn to you often.

The second most important thing you can do is to respect the wishes of the parents. They need your input and wisdom, but they are also reading about newer techniques and all the latest scientific medical information about children, some of which are actually better than the older ways. Again, if you respect their choices they will be more inclined to listen to your ideas.

Grandmothers nowadays are likely to be working grandmothers. It may be more difficult to find the time than a non-employed grandmother can. Work with the parents so that you can schedule visits on days off. Find ways to interact with your grandchildren even on days that you do work. Call them on the phone often.

Keep your home grandchild-friendly. Make sure you have your own supply of books, toys, and foods that are age appropriate. If special furniture is needed, such as a highchair, invest in it. You want your place to be a home away from home for your grandchildren.

Study up on fun crafts and rainy-day projects and keep supplies on hand. Play right along with your grandchildren. Talk to them about the fun projects you did a child. Tell them stories about their parents.

In your spare time, while watching television or a movie, or work on your own project for them. If you knit or crochet you might make each of your grandchildren a small afghan blanket. If you love to sew, try making them a quilt or coverlet. If they seem interested, teach them how to do these things.

Teach your grandchildren how to cook! There are many cookbooks available that are filled with great cooking projects for children.  Let them help you knead bread or cut out biscuits!

One of the best things you can do for your grandchildren (or your own children for that matter) is to research and create a family tree.  Show them where they belong and where they came from.

If you live a long distance away keep in touch through the magic of the internet. Buy a webcam, so that you can read stories to them when you visit across the internet highway.

Take time to listen to your grandchildren. Never be in a rush. The time you spend with them is as important to them as it is to you.  They will grow up with cherished memories of a grandmother who took the time to listen, and who always understood.
