After nine months in the planning, the newborn Uniqueboutique.co.nz for kids and their grown-ups has arrived in New Zealand! The brainchild of mother-of-three Tam de Haan, this is an online children’s boutique with a difference.
All of their products are either exclusively imported, or, as with 90% of their products, have been specifically designed for Uniqueboutique.co.nz, so you won’t find the products on any other website or in any other store in New Zealand. Every mum will be able to find items that are special and unique.
The selection includes beautiful organic and bamboo kids clothes, limited edition artworks,
upcycled vintage toys and furnishings, accessories as well as beauty supplies, leather nappy bags, slings and carriers – and the collection is growing.
The Gloss team caught up with Tam to find out how she balances running her new venture with her role as mum to three kids under four!
Tell us about your new venture, Uniqueboutique.co.nz. How does it differ from other online children’s clothing boutiques?
The main difference between UniqueBoutique.co.nz and other online stores is that I only sell items that are either exclusive to me or that we import through our sister company (Bentam Ltd).
Many of the items stocked at Uniqueboutique.co.nz are exclusive, limited edition items. Where do you source your stock, can you reveal your secrets?
I spend hours, honestly hours searching on the internet! I also now get approached from people wishing me to stock them - so I am a very lucky girl!
You have mentioned your struggle with Post-Natal Depression, and that starting your business helped you overcome that. Do you have any tips for other women struggling with this disease?
Just want to point out that Post-Natal Depression isn't a disease it's an illness. I believe you never really recover, you just learn to manage and acknowledge that you have this illness. I found for me that asking for help was the biggest step, and I received the most amazing support from my husband, maternal mental health and the local mental health board. I'm not one for self help books but I was recommended You Sexy Mother by Jodie Hedley-Ward, I found that a lot of what she said made sense to me.
How do you manage your role as a business owner with your role as a parent?
That's a hard one - I have 3 children (4, 3 and 1). The eldest two go to kindergarten and I stay at home with the youngest apart from one day a week when I have a lovely lady who has her for the day whilst I spend the day at the office catching up with everything. I work on my laptop every evening after the children are settled in bed - I also pop into the office every day to pack up orders! So, it is never ending!
What do you enjoy most about being a business owner?
That I am able to be at home with my children but still can get the brain working to make me feel a bit normal!
For you, what is the best thing about being a parent?
The cuddles for sure - nothing beats a mummy cuddle!!
