ImageThe reality is that babies cry for many reasons. When babies are young, they have no other way of communicating with you. If they have a need, they cry. You will learn, mainly through trial and error, the different sounds of your baby crying and what each means. Eventually, you'll be able to understand your baby's signals and messages with ease.

Keep yourself calm

When you first hear your baby crying, it is important to stay calm and remember they are getting your attention in the only way they can. Their diaper may need to be changed, they may be hungry, they may be too hot or too cold, or they could just want a good cuddle. Babies love attention, but there are times when too much attention will overstimulate them and they will start crying again. Learning why your baby is crying is slow process, but well worth the effort invested.

Colic can also cause babies to cry, generally for extended periods of time. However the crying tends to be high pitched, which might alert you to the problem. These babies may also raise their legs and become very red in the face. These crying spells can happen at the same time day after day. If you suspect that your baby has colic, consider taking him or her to the doctor to be evaluated.

Babies seem to know when a parent is anxious, and they will keep crying even though the problem has been dealt with. It is never easy, but you should try and relax when your baby starts to cry. Instead of thinking about the noise they are making, and how that gentle sob can become a loud scream, think about how they are talking to you, and want you to meet their needs. If the crying becomes too stressful, consider having a friend or relative take the baby for a short time so that you can have a break.

As your baby gets older, you will soon recognise the differences in their crying. You will know when they are just after attention, or even when they are bored. This is the time, to put a few toys in easy reach of them, so they can play quietly in their crib. Learning to recognise your baby's cries will help you to understand the messages he or she is attempting to send you. The more skillful you become in understanding and responding, the less stressful day to day life will be.

While this is a great article on how to start understanding your baby, there is a new device in the apple app store to do the same thing from your iphone.

Hi 'myemailisjustin'
I was curious about your app - it looks interesting, but it states on the site itself that it is just a novelty.

I think in this case surely a mum knows best?!
