Healthy snacks for healthy kids

healthy_snack.jpgHealthy snacks need not be difficult. With a little creativity and a whole lot of patience any child can find the healthy snacks that they just can't get enough of…

Kid friendly snacks that are healthy for them can be a difficult undertaking. Children's taste buds are very particular and sensitive, so bitter foods seem that much more bitter while sweet foods taste that much sweeter and therefore are so much more appealing to the palate. It is actually quite simple to incorporate healthy foods into snack time once you begin doing it.

Make your cupboards healthy
The first step is to just start. Purge the house of the junk and replace it with good healthy food. Now when it comes to children we are often left wondering, but what types of snacks does that leave us that they will actually like? Well, it is simple. Instead of trying to get them to eat the bitter vegetables and fruits to fulfil their daily needs give them the sweet berries and bananas and other things they love.

Make vegetables more appealing by using a fruit yogurt as dip. Not only are they going to be getting the healthy benefits of the yogurt, they are also going to be more inclined to eat the vegetables because they taste better.

Get some trail mix. Children love trail mix and it has a healthy supply of nutrients from nuts and raisins. Or better yet, make some trail mix with the kids. Children love doing things and nothing will motivate them better to eat something then making it themselves. Or we can make it even better and give each child their own bag or container to mix the mix in, supply lots of little bowls with various nuts, dry cereals and things like raisins and allow each child to create the trail mix that they really want, instead of one trying to please all of them.

Make smoothies. Children love milk shakes and other such drinks, so make smoothies. This way if they won't eat the food they may “drink” it and enjoy it. Another added bonus is sometimes the mixtures of the different fruits and vegetables covers the tastes of the ones that children don't tend to eat or enjoy.

Add peanut butter to celery sticks. It’s a big hit with children and can encourage them to eat vegetables they don't like alone. Another alternative is “Ants on a log” where you spread the peanut butter and then place raisins down the stalk, making it look like ants crawling on a log. Or you could also grate cheese over the vegetables.

Getting children to eat healthy and pick healthy snacks at time takes a lot of creative powers, but the health benefits to them for their entire lives is more than worth the added time.
