Nelson based nutrition consultant and Chef Nicola Galloway, is celebrating the release of her third book this month, a recipe book of easy meals for babies and young children.

Being a parent herself, and with another baby on the way, Nicola understands how busy parents and caregivers are.

So her new book, 'Feeding Little Tummies: a guide for New Zealand parents and caregivers' aims to help parents and caregives prepare simple, healthy meals to add variety to what their children are eating.

“I think people really appreciate that when you make the food yourself you’ve got control over the ingredients you’re using” says Nicola.

This fantastic book contains over 100 illustrated recipes. Beginning with a first foods section that relates to a child’s development through the first year, with purees introduced slowly from around the age of six months, through to, at around 12 months, eventually eating the same food as the whole family.

The rest of the book is broken into main meal recipes including breakfasts, snacks and lunches, dinners and desserts. Many of the recipes include suggestions for alternative ingredients to help cater for people with food sensitivities.

“We all know that if good eating habits are established as a child, then that will stand them in good stead as adults. But first they need to best fuel we can give them to help support all that rapid growth they go through. Their immune system, the brain and nervous system, their bones – all of that development needs to be supported with good nutrition” says Nicola.

“But it’s also important to remember that children will eat when they are hungry – getting stressed about feeding your child will only make things worst!” says Nicola who also recommends writing a dinner menu each week.

“I’m sure I am not the only one who finds life as a parent not quite as tidy and organised as it was pre-baby but writing a meal plan really helps me. It helps with the shopping, our budgeting, and it also helps make meal times more relaxed.”

Feeding Little Tummies: a guide for New Zealand parents and caregivers by Nicola Galloway, is available from bookstores nationwide – RRP$39.99.
