The festive season is an exciting time of year, and The National Foundation for the Deaf wants to remind parents and caregivers to protect children’s hearing when attending noisy events, such as Santa Parades.

“We love Christmas and the Santa Parades around New Zealand and the vibrant noisy atmosphere is all part of it. But it’s very important for people, especially those who are participating in bands and on floats playing loud music, to remember to protect their hearing” says Louise Carroll, CEO of The Nation Foundation for the Deaf.

It has been scientifically proven that exposure to loud noise can cause permanent hearing loss. People can start developing noise induced hearing loss as children or young adults through being in noisy environments or listening to loud music.

“If you know you’re going to be somewhere noisy during the festive season, use some kind of hearing protection. A pair of inexpensive ear plugs is perfect and mum's can keep them in their handbags, just in case. It’s about protecting our hearing and educating our children to do the same” says Louise.

So while you have a merry, happy Christmas this year, remember to keep children’s hearing protected so you can all enjoy hearing the delightful sounds of Christmas for many years to come.
