baby-massage.jpgMassage causes different parts of the body to react positively. It can help improve circulation and boost the immune system. As you massage your baby, you will find it is a time when you get to know each other.

It benefits you and your baby

When you massage a baby, you will find it is a two way exercise. You and the baby should both enjoy the time. If for any reason either of you are not enjoying it, then you should consider whether you are performing it correctly. It may be time to stop and try again on another day.

It is important to choose the best possible time to massage your baby. Wait at least twenty minutes after a feeding, and avoid a time that is too close to bedtime. Don't give a massage when your baby is upset, as it can make them feel worse. One good time is after you have given your baby a bath. They're already undressed; the pores will be open from the heat of the water, allowing the oil to be absorbed by the skin.

You should always ensure you have a warm room, and there are no draughts before you begin to give a massage. Make sure you are not going to be disturbed. Play some quiet music in the background.  Remove all your jewelry; you don't want anything that might hurt the baby. Make sure your hands are warm; there is nothing worse than cold hands on a warm body. Don't forget the towels!

If you have never given a massage before, you should look at some pictures to see exactly what you should be doing. There are many books available on the subject of baby massage - consider picking one up to help you learn. You and your baby will both enjoy the learning process, and you'll be obtaining a new skill that you can use for a lifetime.

Always massage slowly and gently. Don't put a lot of pressure on the body, as you don't want to injure the baby in any way. You want this to be a pleasant experience for them. Your baby will feel the love you are giving them, and in turn feel very safe and relaxed with you. It is a way you can communicate with them, letting them know how loved and safe they are.
