Creating A Wedding Colour Theme

ImageSo you're no interior decorator and now you have a wedding to plan and you want it to look just right. Where do you start? Creating a colour code that feels right for your wedding will help align a theme and set the right mood for your special day. Read on for tips...

The season

What season are you getting married? Spring and summer is a popular time of year for weddings, and works really well with delicate pastels, ivory and white, or joyful colours such as yellow. Autumn and winter are a great time of year to vamp up the rich tonal shades of burgundy or forest green - beautiful when accented with touches of gold.

The location

Take a look at your location and match the colour tones to it. If you are getting married in a garden, ivory will always look pretty - but you may want to play up the colour of a dominating flower in the garden, likewise beach weddings are fabulous toned with sea greens and shades of blue. If you are going for a formal evening wedding, this is a great opportunity to add some depth and intensity to the shades of your wedding - think lush, velvety reds or glamorous gold.

The moods of colours

All colours have moods. Lemon and sunshine yellow - joy; deep red and burgundy - sophisticated glamour; pastel pink - romance; eggshell blue or aqua green - tranquil zen. The mood that your colour evokes can also be matched to the vibe that you want your wedding to have. Are you wanting something formal and elegant, relaxed and laidback, or a party that goes into the wee hours?

The hue for you

When you have selected a colour that you would like for your wedding, you can then pick other colours that will accent with it. Having a play with the colour charts in paint stores can really help you to choose shades you like, and know what other colours to mix it with. So, if the colour of choice for you is baby pink - you may want to complement it with fushia and white.

What will need colour?

Your colour is going to be an important aspect of your entire wedding. Look for stationery, flowers, table settings, bridesmaid's dresses, groomsman's attire and even the cake that in some way fit with your chosen hue. And remember, that the little touches can bring it all together perfectly - coloured candles on the tables, ribbon trim wrapped around the base of trees in an outdoor wedding, or around the edge of door or window frames for an indoor wedding.
