It is the ‘princess dream’, the one where Prince Charming comes to sweep us off our feet and rescuing us from what ever we are living or experiencing. But sometimes being swept off our feet can hide problems from us that if ignored, will only cause huge issues later on.

Here are some tips for protecting new love

• If you’ve met someone and think he is ‘the one’, keep your guard up a little and make sure you keep your feet firmly on the ground.

• Make sure you keep connections with friends and family. A man that is right for you will encourage you to maintain your own interests and stay in touch with others.

• You might want to talk and talk and talk, but fatigue from all those late nights can stop you from thinking straight and help you run your relationship on romance rather than stepping back and looking at warning signals. A tired person can also talk about far more than a non-tired person, and reveal intimacies they shouldn’t.

• If you are imagining a day of wedded bliss in the first few weeks of dating, take a step back. You may miss any warning signs if you are focusing too much on the romance of the future.

• If you feel they are forcing you to do something you feel will make you feel uncomfortable then don’t do it. If they start to try and convince you to do it, walk away from the relationship. If you have said yes but it made you feel bad, you are allowed to change your mind.

• If you have ended up in a relationship where you are being manipulated, then talk to a friend or talk to a domestic violence hotline. Abuse is not always an overt hit round the ears but can be emotional manipulation or psychological abuse.

Getting those lovely loving feelings is wonderful at the start of any new relationship. The warning signs of a dangerous form of love tend to be anything that makes us blind to what is really going on. If he is the love of your life, take it slow - you’re going to have a lifetime together anyway!
