Sweaty palms and stammering... It's natural to get the jitters before a first date so don't worry - and if it helps, remember your date is also probably a little nervous too!
Here's a few ideas to take the stress off a first date.
So where do you go?
Lunch is
always a good idea for a first date - it's a more informal time of day than
dinner, so if you do want a quick escape you won't have to suffer for too long.
And you shouldn't need to worry about dim lights and romantic music making your
date think he's coming back to your place for a 'coffee' if you can't stand him!
Of course you can keep the afternoon free if you want to move on and do
something else.

Newspaper... Well, it might sound odd, but if you are one of those people that
feels uncomfortable during silences, it can put your mind at ease to suss out
what's going on in the world so you have some interesting topics to talk about.
Talk Talk Talk You don't have to be an expert on
politics or have a university degree to be a good conversationalist. Just
smile, relax and talk. Talk about the menu, talk about what sort of wine you
might like with the meal. Once you start the flow of conversation you'll find
it easy to talk about more interesting topics like hobbies, travelling, work,
film, music...
Listen
Just as important as talking is listening and asking questions. Show you are
interested in your date by asking them about themselves, their career, where
they live, and listen to their answers. Nobody wants to sit through a date
where they can't get a word in edge-ways.
Common Interests If the date is going well and you would like to see the person again, you
can simply say 'I've really enjoyed lunch, would you be keen to do dinner next
week?' Or if you prefer a more roundabout way of approaching the second date
topic, you can always pick up on a common interest, such as a film you both
want to see or a passion for golf and suggest the two of you meet in a week for
a film or a round of golf.
