lunch-break.jpgSick of the same old sitting at your desk and working through your lunch break getting crumbs in your keyboard? We say power to the people - it's time to take back your lunch break and get some work/life balance...

Perhaps you feel people will think you aren't working hard enough if you take a lunch break, or that you're on a roll with work and you'll lose that edge if you take time off? Whatever your excuse, most of us would agree we are far more efficient if we take a proper lunch break away from the office. Just as you know you need to recharge your body by eating healthily during the day it's important to recharge your brain during the lunch break.

And think of the bonus of all that extra time you gain if you actually use your lunch hour efficiently? That's an extra 5 hours a week you will gain!

Meet a friend for lunch
Sometimes it can be hard to find the time to meet up with all of your friends, so instead of making excuses about why you haven't seen your girlfriends in a while, why not arrange to meet with a friend for lunch?

Visit an art gallery or museum
If you've had a stressful day at work what better than to immerse yourself in the Zen-like stillness of a local art gallery or museum? You'll find you leave feeling relaxed and culturally stimulated at the same time. If you work in a creative role you will no doubt find some inspiration as well.

Exercise
If you are always whining that you don't have time to exercise then it's time to think again... In a lunch break you should be able to achieve a good 30 minutes exercise, so whether you pound the pavement at the local park, head to the gym or even just go for a walk you can burn off some calories and get back to work buzzing with energy.

Read
Got a great book on the go but you collapse into bed each night too tired to read? Take your book to work, get comfortable in your office seat or if your office or head to your favourite park bench and indulge in a good few chapters of your book.

Get in touch with family
Oops, your mother and grandma are feeling neglected again, but you've got so much on in the weekend that gassing to your mum for 40minutes sounds impossible? Easy! Phone your family on your lunch break or write letters or emails to overseas family members that you haven't contacted for a while.

Coffee crawl
If you happen to work near a café strip chances are you have your favourite but haven't tried most of the others. Soak up the atmosphere of a café you haven't tried before... It's an ideal way to read the paper or a magazine while you enjoy your coffee too.

Make a date
Dating can be disastrous - he might be a bung-eyed, gammy-legged freak or maybe he was gorgeous but had nothing between his ears and you wasted Saturday night in silence. A lunch break is the perfect time to scope someone out and get a taster before you make another date...

Couldn't agree more, I only get a half hour lunch, boring!! My husband surprised me last week as he was on leave, and came and took me out on a lunch date. I was so happy rest of the day, its the simple things that help. A mere change of routine.
