organic-gardening.jpgOrganic gardening reassures us that all the sprays and fertilisers we apply have come from natural sources, proven safe (not only for us but for our children and pets) by many generations of our gardening ancestors. The secret of organic gardening lies in imitating nature to feed your plants. Looking after all the complex soil microbes, worms, and beneficial insects and then insuring a balance of micro and macro nutrients gives us healthy plants capable of resisting pests themselves.

Your greatest friend to achieve a great soil is a well-prepared compost. In fact the early NZ organic groups were first named compost clubs.

In nature as plants die and decay they feed the top soil and provide nutrients for the next generation of plants.

Spreading compost onto our garden soil, helps create humus which has the ability to hold moisture on hot, dry days at the same time as stopping the soil from waterlogging on wet days. The humus keeps the soil open, letting plant roots easily penetrate and it is the perfect vehicle for roots to assimilate a full range of nutrients.

An extensive study was done by the Rutges University in the USA comparing food grown using bare soil and chemical fertilisers as against organic food grown in compost. Analysis showed that organic snap beans had three times more calcium and twenty times more iron in them than the beans grown with chemical fertilisers. These two minerals assist bone repair and healthy blood.

If all our vegetables were so full of goodness we wouldn't have to resort to vitamin and mineral supplements.

Growing your own veges organically means you are making a positive investment in your own health.
