manwallinsulation.jpgIt’s not only your choice of heating which determines how warm a home will be come the winter months. Insulation, ventilation and flooring are all factors to consider and there are even options allowing families to continue enjoying the outdoors.

At this time of year, many are trying to hold onto the summer feeling, and that can be achieved with the use of a canopy which can be fully enclosed with side sheets, providing the extra space of an outdoor room.

As the weather continues to cool, the addition of a patio heater or infrared heater to the weatherproof area allows you to entertain year-round, even barbecuing under shelter.

Something as basic as closing curtains before nightfall can ensure the house stays much warmer during the evening. Window tinting and security film also help keep heat in.

These protective window treatment products act as insulators with the film acting as a thermal blanket. Warm air, which is created in the home, actually stays inside during winter, because it can’t escape through the glass.

Ventilation systems take filtered air from a roof space and distribute it through the rooms of the home, making the air drier and easier to heat.

Solid timber flooring and quality carpet both provide that little bit of extra warmth underfoot, helping to insulate the home and rugs can make all the difference on cold tiled floors.

Of course, insulation is a fundamental part of making a home warmer, drier and healthier.

Nearly 60 percent of homes have inadequate insulation, so addressing your home’s insulation is a good start to achieving a comfy retreat from you and your family.

The introduction of a government scheme to raise temperatures in Kiwi homes means many homeowners can receive assistance to make their homes warmer, drier and healthier.

The Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart programme enables all New Zealand homeowners, whose homes were built before the year 2000 to receive partial funding for insulation.

Installation of ceiling and under-floor insulation must be done with approved products and be undertaken by a provider who is registered to take part in the scheme.

Whatever your preference, there are plenty of options to suit every home and budget. Taking steps today will ensure your home is prepared for the winter onslaught.
