ImageIf the warm weather has you inspired to get into your garden, our good friends at www.garden-nz.co.nz reveal what you could be doing to get your garden going in February...





Vegetables


* February is the time to prepare for Winter crops and vegetable patches. Sow carrots, parsnips, beetroot, spinach, peas, cauliflower and cabbage. Build up the soil first with peat, compost, Thrive Lime for calcium and Thrive All Purpose for an even balance of plant food.
* Continue taking laterals off your Tomatoes and harvesting ripe Tomatoes making sure to remove any fallen or diseased fruit to prevent disease spreading.
* Side dress all winter maturing vegetables with Thrive All Purpose.
* Lift early crops of potatoes when the tops die off. Make sure they are properly dried before storing. Lift, dry and store garlic, shallots and onions. Hang up inside to ripen before cleaning and storing.

Lawn Care


* Start your application of Diazanon now for your treatment of Grass Grub.
* Prepare the ground now for sowing an Autumn lawn.
* Check the sharpness of your lawn mower blades, if the blades are blunt they will damage the grass and this can cause disease problems.

Fruit


* Feed citrus trees with Thrive Citrus Food. Water under and around the tree first and immediately after to prevent burning of the feeder roots.
* Prune raspberries once fruiting has finished. Remove dead canes and tie up fresh growth.

Indoor Gardening


* February is usually the hottest and driest part of the year, so watering is essential. Remember to water early morning or in the evening to minimise water wastage.

Trees


* Continue Summer pruning of fruit trees and seal cuts with Bacseal Pruning Paint.

Organic Gardening


* Turn your compost pile now after the holiday season, this encourages more organisms which break down the components.
* Remove weeds from the garden put them in your compost bin or rubbish. Do not leave on the garden soil as they will re-grow.
* Herbs - it's time to plant chervil, coriander and basil for Autumn. Remember they need a warm spot, full sun and do not like heavy wet soils.

Container Gardening


* Containers need a good watering at night and morning to keep them growing through the hot part of the year.
* Lift and divide daffodils, tulips and other Spring bulbs. Replant them in the garden or in pots and containers.
* Sow seeds of Violas, Pansies and polyanthus for winter colour. Sow in trays in seed raising mix.

Plant Care / Spraying


* Spray roses with No Fungus Super Sulphur to control mildew and insects.
* Spray passionfruit, peaches and nectarines with Mavrik to control insect pests.
* Control whitefly by spraying regularly with Derris Dust or Target. Spray at three day intervals for two weeks to break the breeding cycle.
