sore_body_has_lead_to_sedentary_lifestyle.jpgHi, I am nearly 60 and am wondering what is the best way to get slimmer and fitter but not at the risk of my health. I have a sedentary lifestyle due to legs swelling. At the moment I walk 1 trip per week to get groceries, but I usually end up with a back-ache. I also do limber up of thigh muscles twice weekly for about 15 mins at a time. My left side is falling apart! I suffer from tendonitis of the wrist, hip area, left leg and ankle.

Hi there,

It sounds like you have some structural issue's to deal with to enable you to increase your activity. For this reason, it may be best to see a Physiotherapist or muscular skeletal expert for further advice.

Activities that are generally not too taxing on the body could include swimming, aquarobics, gentle forms of yoga, Tai Chi etc. Finding a variety of activities you enjoy is important.

Sensible eating is the other major area to manage weight when activity is low. Cut out the processed, packaged and pre-prepared foods, and eat fresh foods only - fruit, vegetables, lean proteins - this will also assist in reducing the swelling in the legs. Include some chickpeas, kidney and black beans in your diet to shift that excess fluid as well. Keep the starchy Carbohydrates such as bread, pastry, potato's, pasta low in your diet - about palm sized portion with 1 or 2 of your meals, not every meal.

Drink plenty of water and/or herbal teas, as often when we feel hungry we are actually dehydrated.

Never shop when you are hungry, always eat first to avoid poor choices! And it helps to read food labels so you are not adding foods that are high in sugars, saturated or trans fats to your diet.

Good luck!

Karen
