You try to eat healthy, recycle when you can and are environmentally conscious... and think you're green. Here are a few guidelines to help you get started on beauty - the natural way...
By going green and using natural skincare products, our bodies are sure to benefit in more ways than one. But with the market saturated by products claiming to be natural, holistic and even organic, where do we start? How do we decide what to buy and where from? Try these quick tips:
· Buy direct from a health shop or pharmacy. By buying products direct from these retailers, you can seek help from professionals who know and understand the products well. Speak to them about your problem areas and what you're looking for. They can recommend a range that best suits you. Let them know what is important to you in a brand - whether it be ethics, reputation or ingredients.
· Always read the label. This is extremely important in the natural beauty product world. Because the ingredients in the products are natural, it is easier to identify them and therefore make a sound judgment on whether or not to purchase. Ingredients in such products are usually listed in most used to least used. In natural products, you should always look for water or aqua at the top of the list. This means there is more water used than any other ingredients and that is important for the hydration of your skin.
· Look for use-by dates. Natural skincare should always include a use-by or expiry date somewhere on the pack. Because the products use herbal or organic ingredients, this is an important piece of information. Never use a product past its expiry date as you can damage your skin terribly.
· Sample. Like food, skincare products should be sampled before use. Always use a tester or a small drop somewhere on the skin first. Most products have a leaflet or instructions on how to test on the skin and this should not be ignored. You may have allergies and sensitivities that you yourself don't even know about yet. Call the numbers on the packs or visit the websites if you have any abnormal reactions.
· Research. Taking in mind that everyone's skin is different and has different needs, investigate into brands and their products. Don't settle for just a good looking TV ad or magazine insert - visit websites, ask friends to see what they have tried, talk to professionals about what you're thinking of using. Word of mouth is usually the best marketing there is, so if lots of people are raving about a product, check it out for yourself to see what the fuss is about.
· Don't pay too much. Just because a product is expensive, it does not make it good. Don't overpay for things just because someone is doing a good sales pitch. Always be one step ahead. If you've researched your product well, you will not need a sales pitch - just more advice. Make this clear from the start and set a budget.
