Our oceans are under serious threat, and the negative repercussions of a
modern, disposable lifestyle are evident in the huge areas of floating
plastic waste in oceans around the world.
Awareness and discussion of this growing problem is the key to a solution and Electrolux is helping clean up them up.
Launched in 2010, Electrolux’s successful ‘Vac from the Sea’ initiative has seen plastic gathered from the world’s oceans and recycled into five limited edition vacuum cleaners.
Each of the ‘Vac from the Sea’ designs represents the ocean from which the plastic was collected.
The vacuums embody the plastic paradox: oceans are full of plastic waste, yet on land there is a shortage of recycled plastic for producing sustainable recycled plastic products.
"Our intention is to bring awareness to the situation and the need for better plastic karma. So far, over 60 million people have been reached and we are continuing the initiative following the great response" says Cecilia Nord, Vice President – Floor Care Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, Electrolux.
Now a limited edition New Zealand ‘Vac from the Sea’ has been created to bring attention to the issue of plastic pollution on our very own foreshore, and to drive the much-needed discussion on recycling plastic in New Zealand.
The vibrant New Zealand ‘Vac from the Sea’ edition has been designed by eco-fashion designer Laurie Foon from Starfish(pictured), using an array of plastic collected from organised Electrolux beach cleanups around New Zealand.
Electrolux’s green range of vacuum cleaners use up to 70 percent recycled plastic, and their ultimate goal is 100 percent, for all their ranges.
