Singstar party
Playstation has proven that games can be as much about group fun as entertaining yourself. We love the quiz game Buzz, but our top pick has to be Singstar for its massive party potential. The beauty of Singstar is that each game has a selection of music that varies from Rihanna to Motorhead, so there is something for all tastes. Get hold of a Playstation 2, a Singstar series of games and some microphone sets and throw a Singstar Party. Watch as friends that swear they are adverse to exhibitionism are transformed into pop star wannabies by this addictive game - you'll be hogging the microphone in no time. Make a Singstar party even more fun by getting guests to come dressed as their favourite musician and make people draw their song challenge out of a hat - there's nothing more funny than seeing a Kiwi bloke trying to sing like The Veronicas. Prepare for your Singstar party night by heading to your local $2 Dollar Shop to purchase cheap crowns and other spot prizes for top performances and the grand winner. For the truly obsessed SingStar party fans, Singstar is now available on PS3 which means you are able to record yourself on the mics and post up on MySingStar.com as well as download additional tracks from the net.

Luau party
Come summer, liven up a backyard bbq with a luau party. The summery spirit of Hawaii offers many party possibilities - set up a paddling pool or a sandpit in the back yard and make sure the invite specifies that all guests are to dress up in their best impression of Hawaiian costume. Even the food served up can take on a traditional Hawaiian theme such as roasted pig on a spit, and plenty of pineapples for dessert and pina coladas and fruit punch for drink (topped with little umbrellas to make them look beachy of course!) To deck out your guests in costume, head to your local two-dollar shop and grab straw hats, leis and grass skirts. You can even theme your entertainment around Hawaii with a limbo and a Hawaiian dance competition.

Fondue party
Take your guests back to the 70s with a delicious fondue party. Fondue for the uninitiated is a pot of melted cheese or oil based broth for savoury dippers, or sweet sauce such as chocolate for dessert dippers. The sauces are all melted in a big pot, then kept hot in a fondue pot into which people dip skewers of bread, fruit, meat and vegetables. To throw a fondue party you'll need fondue pots, plenty of skewers (soaked bamboo is fine) and loads of 'dippers'. As a rough guide, you will need per person: 15 1 inch cubes of bread, 5 cubes of meat of seafood, 15 pieces of vegetables, 10 pieces of fruit, plus 5 pieces of 'dessert' such as cake, biscuits. Prepare a different sauce per course - you may want a cheese starter, a broth main and a chocolate dessert. Remember the importance of hygiene, so ensure that your guests transfer their food to a separate plate rather than licking the skewer. No double dipping allowed! Naturally, compulsory '70s dress up make a fondue party even more fun!

Spa party
Forget ladies who lunch, the name of this game is ladies who luxe. Step away from the day-to-day and step into a world of being pampered. If money is no object arrange for some professionals to come to your home and treat everyone to a massage, facial or getting their nails done. If budget is an issue, get creative - make home-made facial recipes using ingredients from the kitchen cupboard and take turns to do each other's nails. Theme the day using candles, low lighting, delicious aromatherapy oil scents in the air, relaxing music and plenty of clean, fluffy towels for your guests. Serve up herbal teas, chilled lemon water or bubbles depending on the time of day. Guests will adore the addition of fresh and dried fruits, a cheese platter and other tasty nibbles while they relax and catch up on girlie goss.

Other party ideas

Double Denim - Head to the op shops on a quest for chambray as with this theme every guest must arrive dressed in denim bottoms and top.

Letter Party - Choose a letter of the alphabet and get people to come dressed as a word associated with it, so an 'S Party' could see people dressed as a surfer, school girl, salsa dancer, superman etc etc

Masquerade Party - All guests must come with a mask and costume disguise.

Old Hollywood Party - Invite your party guests to come dressed as their favourite old Hollywood star. This always works well if you have a dressy group of friends as the suits and evening dresses will need to be dusted off for the occasion.
