dream-job-exit.jpgIt’s the start of a new year and the job market is starting to look a lot healthier and you are ready for a change.  It seems like the right time to make a move, but before you leap into the job market boots and all it’s important to put some planning in place to ensure the best job result for you.

• Know what job you want
If you are aware of the type of job or role you are aiming for, you can target the right recruitment agency, industry segment or company to suit. The more specific you can be for what it is you are after and the more focused your search is, the greater your chances are that you will get what you want.

• Explore your industry contacts
Now you know the type of job or company you want to work for, explore your industry contacts and existing networks – they may be able to assist you in getting connected, introduced or recommended. It never hurts to ask around!

• Review your resume
Customise your resume to suit the role, industry, or company you are targeting.  It is not uncommon to have 2 – 3 versions of your resume to suit your job searching process. You will need to make sure it is up to date, promotes the value or benefits you can bring to an organisation and details your achievements.

• Have you a LINKED IN profile
Creating a Linked IN profile is a great to promote your resume online and connect with other industry players and get known.  Joining is free, and all it takes is a bit of time to enter in your relevant information. Go to www.linkedin.com to create your profile and start building your network of industry contacts with other members of Linked IN.

• Do you need to upskill?
Have you got the right skills for the job path you want to take, or do you need to volunteer for greater responsibility in order to learn new skills, or take on some additional learning or training to assist.  You need to continually add to your portfolio of skills to stay in demand and fresh.

• Create a job seeker profile that works for you
Leverage your opportunities to stand out and get noticed.  Use Linked IN, ensure you have an up to date profile at Seek or other online job spots so that you are filtering the right jobs.  Get to know your recruitment consultant so that you are top of mind.  Ensure you are in the best position possible to find or be found for that dream job.

• Hone your interview techniques
Ensure that when you get that interview, you are prepared to knock ‘em dead! Prior to the interview, work out the questions you will likely be asked and have the answers ready so there are few chances of being surprised and going blank under pressure.  Have working examples that you can use to demonstrate your experience and skills and how you can communicate that you are the right person for the job!

• Research your potential employer
To support your interview techniques, make sure you have researched your potential employer. Get as much knowledge as you can from their website, marketing collateral, google searches and the recruitment agency so you have a strong understand of the culture, values and direction of the company you are going to potentially work for. Make the interviewer aware that you want to work for their company, not just any job.

• Be confident
At the end of the day, be confident.  If you can confidently and clearly communicate the value you can bring to a potential employer from your resume through to your interview you are in a strong position to be the selected candidate.

The better your resume is packaged, your profile promoted and the more prepared you are for the job market, the better the chances you have to get the job that you want and negotiating the salary you are worth.  Take the time to refine your job searching techniques and your career will thank you for it.
