Demystifying Psychology... The Pursuit of The Sweet Life!

peaceful_woman.jpgA lot of people feel intimidated by psychology.  It conjures up images of Freud-like characters that ‘read’ your mind and are reserved only for the mentally ill, insane or desperate.  Laura Braid of The Sweet Life Sanctuary explains why psychology can be an integral part of your ‘self care’ and as normal as seeing your hairdresser or beautician...

We are constantly striving to find the best products and services to enhance and encourage our physical beauty and health.  We choose from traditional therapies such as acupuncture or new technologies such as Intense Light Therapy and Botox and we live in a world where we can enlist the help of personal trainers, nutritionists and diet coaches.  At the heart of it all, is our desire to look good. We’ve got the outside catered for, but what about the inside?

Imagine a professional service that promoted flourishing, fulfilled and sustainable psychological wellness.  Imagine discovering a way to think, feel and believe that you and your life are as beautiful inside as they are outside.  Welcome to the world of positive psychology! Positive Psychology and The Sweet Life Sanctuary allows you to focus on your most beautiful, alluring and irresistible attribute - your mind! Consider it a makeover for your mind...

So what is positive psychology?
Traditionally psychology has focused on ‘what is wrong’ and fixing it.  There is most definitely a need for this area of psychology, however, there is also a strong need to determine what is working well and encourage people to live their life with meaning. Positive Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive (Seligman, 2005).  It focuses on human potential, positive traits and dispositions as well as the social institutions that enable us to love life.
It’s a rapidly growing field of psychology that brings solid empirical research into areas of well-being and personal strengths. It provides a more complete and scientific understanding of the human experience and behaviour utilising psychological theory, research, and intervention techniques to understand the positive and emotionally fulfilling aspects of human behaviour.

Why would I need positive psychology in my life?
Humans seek happiness and well-being more than anything else – they seek the ‘good life’. The ‘good life’ is different for each person because it comes from living a life in alignment with your own personal virtues and values. The freedom to love life comes from knowing what you like, what you do best and then using these strengths in your daily life, love, relationships, socialising, career and parenting for optimal living.
Life has its ups and downs: personal issues, problems at home, work, or in your relationships.  We all have positive traits and values, and by allowing yourself to focus on your strengths you can flourish.  Positive psychology and The Sweet Life Sanctuary can help you help yourself with these everyday issues.

How does The Sweet Life Sanctuary work?
The Sweet Life Sanctuary differs from life coaching or counselling because both the individual sessions and group workshops offered include the application of appropriate psychological theory.  With over 10 years of experience and understanding of psychological issues in a variety of contexts, The Sweet Life Sanctuary is well placed to facilitate change and enhance your performance. This is particularly useful if - like most of us - you are experiencing a number of common psychological blocks such as fear of change, stress, fear of failing etc.

The philosophy underlying The Sweet Life Sanctuary’s practice is to enhance well-being, performance and satisfaction in your personal life and work domains, through techniques underpinned by psychological models and concepts grounded in evidence. Psychology offers assessment, treatment and management of mental illness and disorders; however psychology also offers a science and practice of building and maintaining human strength and potential.  It is all about balance. Developing your resilience, focusing on your strengths and realising your desire to live life to your optimum are the most important steps in the pursuit of your sweet life!
