A pioneering treatment for people paralysed by spinal cord injuries is in its early stages and participants are being called for.

It will be based around OMA (olfactory mucosal autotransplantation), which involves taking adult olfactory cells from the roof of a patient’s nose and applying them to the spinal cord injury.

Each surgical procedure takes about four hours and the clinical trial involves physiotherapy and regular monitoring for progress.

Trials are directed by Dr Jim Faed at the Spinal Cord Society’s clinical research laboratories in Dunedin and are expected to take two years.

“The procedure has been used in other parts of the world with sensory improvements and improved muscle function for some patients,” says Dr Faed.

“This will be the first comprehensive clinical trial on OMA anywhere in the world and will measure how much benefit is obtained by comparing two groups of people with spinal cord injury.”
