Juliette Hogan is making many a fashionista swoon with her floor-length pleated skirts while Twenty Seven Names has gone for sheer fabrics and lace.

In another girly manifestation, crochet was on the rampage at Sydney’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (S/S ‘09/10 back in May) in the form of westie-luxe pieces.  Crochet singlets and frocks showed little glimpses of skin - very Bondi (or Takapuna) Beach, and you could tell even that the lacey knit is what all the cool kids will be wearing in the weekends this summer.

This trend obviously goes hand in hand with good looking layering pieces offered by the parallel underwear-as-outerwear trend.  A girl needs something to wear under her whispy sheers to protect her modesty!

Zip it up

If all that is a bit saccharine for your liking, zippers add edgy detail, leather, mesh and studs added toughness and tassels added a little boho-chic, this summer. It's about adding small details to an outfit to toughen it up a bit and about playing with texture to turn something ordinary into devastating high fashion!

You’ll see zips on body hugging little black dresses; leather tassels adorning wrists, waists cinched with studded cut-out leather belts, and gold zippers breaking up simple black garments that also drip with gold chains.

Leather can get pretty – it will show up in pastel colours, laser cut designs and laced leather minis – a great way to wear for nice girls to wear tough look!  Or make like Annah Stretton and go for the tried and true ironic combo of pretty frilly dresses paired with tough motorcycle leathers. Yes it has been done before, but it is almost a classic these days and such an easy, cool look to pull off.  Make it “so 3008” by choosing coloured leather in unexpectedly soft, sculptural styling like that from Deadly Ponies.

With such diverse and strong trends you can be Kate Moss one day and Kate Hudson the next this summer…
