Winter and tougher economic times are on their way but life can still
go on in style. Christchurch’s Stephanie Rumble of Flair Image is one
of New Zealand’s top stylists and shares her tips for getting through
the recession and still maintaining professional polish.
Stephanie believes dressing smartly and presenting well, can make a big difference in meeting people, in getting a job, in improving a job situation and feeling good about one’s self.
Why do you think you won the ‘Best Dressed’ award at the races in 2006?
I wore a dress by leading NZ designer Zambesi which suited my body shape and colouring. All of the elements of my outfit tied together and were in proportion. I also had a fantastic hat which finished the whole thing off.
So now we are into the cooler months and probably tougher financial times. What’s your advice for women to wear before the days and economic climate warm up again?
We are seeing a move away from dresses for women into pencil skirts and more billowing blouses. The mid-thigh length coat is also very popular and so flattering for all figure types. The past three years have seen a dabbling in ‘80s revival. The shoulder pads and structured shoulder are definitely showing their presence again. This is great as it makes the shoulders look wider and hips slimmer! There are ‘shoots’ or ‘booties’ everywhere – beware unless your legs are pencil thin or you are wearing trousers… On the other side of the coin, soft slouchy pants are big this winter and look amazing with a more fitted top. Also look for the jodhpur style of pants – but watch the butt size in them.
What about colours for this winter?
Chocolate brown and charcoal are paving the way for neutrals. I am experiencing a backlash to black – many of my customers are trying to wear colour for winter. The shades of burnt orange, red, navy blue and purple are also featuring and can be really flattering. What does a well styled woman choose for day wear – and evening wear?
My mantra that fashions fade but style is eternal stands for this – we need to select clothing that likes us (as well as things we like) we often go for the latest fashion which may not be appropriate for our proportions or shape. A great classic daywear look that flatters all shapes is the skinny pants and tunic look. The tunic covers up a multitude of sins and the skinny pants make the legs look slimmer under a flowing tunic. Grecian and flowing are all the rage for eveningwear and are supremely elegant.
What about style for the men in our life?
Nothing beats a nice tailored pair of jeans, a well cut shirt (from the likes of Working Style) and a good quality, well kept pair of shoes. Make sure the belt does not let the outfit down. Finish it off with a well designed and cut sports coat (again tailor-made if you are bigger or smaller than average). For eveningwear guys, try a fitted shirt and a skinny tie for a modern look and if it is formal then you can’t beat a classic tux with a twist – this would have a satin trimmed lapel and satin buttons and a satin leg stripe – try a white shirt and tie to look smart!
