The last few seasons have seen a proliferation of a more casual style – tough combat boots, leather leggings, slouchy oversized tees and dresses...but lately, we have seen a turn towards a more refined, ladylike style.  But rather than being ‘prim’ this look is cute and glamorous, and makes a refreshing change.  It’s nice to dress up once in a while!  This trend definitely harks back to the early 60’s style of dressing – fuller, longer skirts, pretty blouses, bows and heels.

We have celebrities such as Carey Mulligan to thank for the rise of this trend.  Carey’s gamine, Audrey Hepburn-like style is a perfect example of the right way to wear this look.  She is fast becoming a style icon, and it’s easy to see why.  I love her throw-back style of dressing, it harks back to the 50’s and 60’s, where women really ‘dressed up’ – but it still has a modern edge.  I’m sure we can also attribute this trend to the popularity of the drama Mad Men – who doesn’t love the Betty Draper’s wardrobe on that show?

In line with this trend, skirt lengths are going longer – either below the knee, or the 60’s style full skirt, worn at a mid-calf length.  Check out this look from Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2011 collection on the runway below – the perfect example.

And of course, heels are an important key to this trend.  Kitten heels like these nude Scarpa shoes have a definite 60’s feel – you can imagine Betty Draper in these!

If you’re not quite sure about going full on prim and proper, try using accessories to get the look.   Headbands, and cute clutch purses accessorised with bows look great too.  Or accessorise with pearls, or a scarf around your neck, and cat’s eye sunglasses.  Belts which cinch you in at the waist will create an elegant silhouette, in keeping with this style.

Hair and makeup are a great way to try this trend too – think classic winged eyeliner, or full red lips.  Hair swept up and accessorised with a head band will complete the look.

So, get in touch with your ladylike roots and let your hemlines go down!
