A major New Zealand company recently instituted a strict dress policy - and little did the employees realise that it came about all because one woman was flashing too much flesh. Image

She was smart and energetic and very very good at her job. But it was hard not to notice her attire - a Ruben-esque woman crammed into boob tubes, tiny shorts, short dresses and anything that exposed her belly. The MD of the company thought about speaking to her about it - but in the end decided instead to put a formal policy in place so that everyone in the company would have to be suitably covered up.

But he only has control over what the people in his company wear. Outside the bounds of the new dress policy, employees can wear what they like. And it seems that what they like is becoming increasingly scant. You only need to walk down the street to see exposed midriffs and plunging necklines.  Even on very young women, who can't necessarily be blamed if 'role models' like Britney, Courtney Love, Pamela Anderson and the like think nothing of showing what in most cases should remain private to the entire world.

Now I am not a prude. In fact I am all for women being able to wear what they want - after all that is a right our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard for. But there has to be a balance - putting it all out there can have the opposite effect to the one you are after. I still recall one night back when I was 19, when my mother forbade me to leave the house in the extremely short skirt I was wearing. Luckily I was prepared, and had photos of her from the 60's, wearing dresses that left nothing to the imagination. But a few years later I saw video footage of me in that very same skirt, and by god she was right. No wonder I got so much male attention - but most of it was only sexual in nature, and from the cellulite on show from that skirt, totally undeserved.

But there is an antidote - simply tell anyone who you believe flashes too much flesh about Burlesque. We all know it is back in fashion, and there is a reason. It condones the titillation and seduction of the opposite sex, by holding a little back. Take it from Dita Von Teese, whose artful and provocative performances hold true to the philosophy that men are drawn to women they don't think they can ever quite possess, people are always keen to see what is only hinted at.

Just look at the Burka. If covering all but a woman's eyes wasn't alluring to practicing Muslims, there wouldn't be any more Muslim children in the world. Perhaps we should tell Britney, Courtney and Pam. Bags not.
