julliette_hogan.jpgJuliette Hogan opened her aptly titled “So Pretty it Hurts” show with the most stunning dove grey swing coat/cape tied at the neck with an oversized bow – talk about setting (or stealing) the scene as from then on, the audience was in raptures. Jackie O'Fee reviews the show for FashioNZ ...

Drawing on a palette ranging from softest nude pastels through to deep inky blues, fabrics as diverse as silk chiffons, dupions and fine wool tweeds, this designer showed her love of all things pretty.

In order to keep costs down the designer opted to share the catwalk this year and combining a show with Twenty-seven Names worked well for Hogan as the labels are very, very different, with the contrast working brilliantly for both.

As with all good design – it’s the details that matter – Juliette Hogans’ long-line cardigan for example had a subtle gather at the hem of the back.  Her inky blue blazer had gorgeous polka-dot detail on the rolled-back cuff.  The black silk tunics and dresses with front zippers had divinely constructed shoulder detail, adding to their strength while maintaining their feminine edge. The soft nude toned silk chiffon pleated maxi dresses and skirts were ethereally pretty rather than boho and Hogans’ pegged, skinny pants were in shades of navy and teamed with ladylike print blouses. There were the waistcoats and blazers as seen on most catwalks so far, but Hogans’ were somehow softer, worn open rather than tightly structured.

Waterfalls of softly ruffled silk made for beautiful dresses and skirts and as a slight departure into something more structured, a couple of bustier top dresses in bright blue & plaid silk with short but full skirts. The skirt is something Hogan does well, a gorgeous, below the knee full-circle grey silk one was one of the collections stand-outs for me, while slimmer through the thigh yet gathered at the waist mini-skirted versions were adorable also.

The collection looked back to a more ladylike time; back to when clothing was a little bit prim & proper. The designer states her inspiration was the idea of “bookish beauty” and as such, these pieces stand apart for their pared down beauty and femininity.
