Day one of New Zealand Fashion Week has come to an end and what a day it was! (Click here for complete coverage of New Zealand Fashion Week ).

The Gloss team has been waiting for this week in anticipation and they certainly were not let down. On Monday night New Zealand Fashion Week was officially declared open with a VIP bash at the new look Fashion Week Village on Auckland’s Viaduct. Fashion Week director Pieter Stewart welcomed guests and spoke of the highlights of the last ten years. Guests such as Auckland mayor John Banks, Derek Warburton, Rumi Neely and lots of local celebrities were wowed by a performance by Mika. The night set the stage for the great fashion we are going to encounter during the remainder of the week.

The day kicked off with a bang as the first show was Laurie Foon’s Starfish collection. Starfish’s collection, Seven Sisters is eco-friendly. The collection is based around the relationships between siblings. Therefore the collection is prim and lady like with a modern twist, for today’s New Zealand woman. The local inspiration was evident from the very ‘kiwi’ colour palette to the swandri-esque printed Suri and floral printed skirts and sweat shirting.

Cybele’s Nieriya collection was next up and it ‘evokes a pagan cult of nature’. Cybele’s intention with the collection is to invoke a sense of elements colliding – earth, air, fire and water. Cybele’s collection included pieces such as, corset style waist belts and bustiers, high wasted pants made of graphic fabric and an asymmetric cape. Just to give you a taster! Cybele’s vision for the collection was fully realised through the show – from the ethereal makeup, with the models wearing white eye shadow and earthy tones on their lips, to the electric soundtrack, the show gave you a sense of the elements colliding.  An entertaining and high-impact show!

Andrea Moore described her range as “a runaway freight train, it really seems to have a life of its own”. That life is hugely apparent in an array of digitally printed tropical florals and signature oversized multi coloured polka dots and plaids. Andrea Moore’s Camel coloured ‘Major Trench’ is classic and no doubt it will be a must have item next winter. Overall the collection is highly wearable for any woman and will last for seasons ahead.

Juliette Hogan was definitely one of the most talked about shows of the day. Her collection has been described as, “sweet, whimsical and beautiful”. Her pieces were all very feminine. Her neutral palette of nudes, pinks and beiges was offset by shades of black, lace and polka dots. The collection also had a distinct 60’s feel to it, and this was emphasised by the hair and makeup - chic up-dos and simple winged eyeliner and blush pink lips and cheeks. Certain pieces of Juliette are wardrobe must haves. Such as, the Pussy-bow blouse, check trench coat and the form-fitting neutral one-shoulder dress. I can’t wait to have a wardrobe filled of this year’s Juliette Hogan pieces.
