Gloss handbag snoop Emma Smith, caught up with Kiwi actor and adventure traveller Robyn Malcolm for a good old rummage through her handbag as well as a chat about her upcoming journey to China which aims to raise money for Variety – The Children’s Charity.

Next year in June, Robyn will be jumping on a plane together with a group of like-minded explorers to take part in an adventure of a life time, The Great Wall of China Challenge.

This 13-day trek along remote sections of the Great Wall of China will include camping at seldom visited villages and taking in sections of the Great Wall that few others see.

The trek ranks among one of the great challenges on this planet and Robyn is inviting you to join her!

“I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to do this trip. I have not been to China and aside from the incredible cuisine, there is a culture, history and landscape I’m really excited about,” said Robyn when I caught up with her recently.

“I am also thrilled to be able to do something for Variety – The Children’s Charity; they are such positive and active advocates for our kids. It’s a win-win for me and I’m very grateful!”

So what does someone like Robyn carry around in her handbag? Let’s find out….

Do you have a favourite style or designer?

Something I can throw over my shoulder and run with. I’ve never got the whole fashion thing with bags.

I’d really like to understand it, because I know some women get an enormous amount of pleasure out of ‘the bag’ but I just never have. It’s all about being practical for me.

This bag I have at the moment was given to me by a dear friend and I didn’t even know what it was until other girlfriends were like, “Oh, my god you’ve got an Orla Kiely bag,” and I’m like, “Do I? Awesome!”

I use a kete a lot and I love them. The flax is really sturdy so my ideal bag would probably be a kete if I think about it.

Do you prefer a small or large handbag?

It has to be a medium size bag for sure, although it still needs to be big enough to get a script into easily.

Nothing too big, such as a satchel, because the handbag goes everywhere and I’m one of those people who jam everything into the main body of the bag.

If it’s too big things like my car keys, cell phone and wallet seem to get eaten! I need to be able to grab things quickly and easily. It also needs to be really solid so I can jam stuff into it and know I’m not going to break it!

What can’t you leave home without and what don’t you need?
I need my car keys because it would be stupid to leave home without them! I also can’t leave home without my wallet or my sunglasses. I can actually cope without most of this stuff.

What’s the most embarrassing thing to have fallen out of your handbag?
It was when I used to smoke. I was in a bar and in mid conversation with some guy I was trying to impress and while I was talking I reached into my bag to pull a cigarette out and I pulled a tampon out by mistake! Very embarrassing but true!

Check out just some of the bits and bobs I found in Robyn’s handbag:
  • Pens – lots of pens and a pencil! Robyn admitted to being a bit of a pen thief!
  • Her five-year old son Pete’s spelling list from school
  • A selection of M.A.C lipsticks and foundation
  • Greenpeace business card
  • RNZSPCA badge
  • iPhone and charger
  • Diary
  • Notebook for her speeches
  • Cheque book
  • Wallet
  • Specs
  • Variety Club notes about her trip to China for her interviews with media
  • Eraser
  • Sunglasses
  • Contact lens solution
