What's in Kat's handbag?

Gloss handbag snoop Emma Smith, recently caught up with the Kiwi jewellery designer Kat Gee for a chat and a good old rummage through her handbag.

A career in jewellery seemed almost inevitable for Kat Gee who has always had a passion for jewellery and an addiction to adornments.

From the tender age of eight years old Kat could be found hunting through her grandmother’s bead drawer or selling Fimo pendants she’d designed and made herself.

But, it wasn’t until after a few years working as a graphic artist that she decided to ditch her day job and launch Kagi, her own versatile range of interchangeable necklaces, bracelets and pendants.

So what does Kat carry around in her handbag? Let’s see….

Do you prefer a small or large handbag?
Both. I love using a small clutch/purse for occasion wear such as the races, weddings, or fashion events. At the moment I am using a very large, soft, black leather Mimco bag for daywear.

Do you have a favourite style of bag?
This depends on the day you’re asking and my mood! I have a wee bit of an obsession with handbags and at last count there were 11 taking residence in my wardrobe.

Each has its own unique style and I tend to switch them almost as much as I do jewellery.

Just like jewellery I find that switching your handbag can totally refresh your look and take an outfit from day boho to evening luxe. I seem to prefer handbags that are simple and structured with minimal detailing and high quality fabrics.

Colourwise I’m quite adventurous: Jessica rabbit red, electric blue, chocolate, moody grey, aqua, gold sequins and jet black mesh are just some of the handbag colours I own.

At the moment my bag of choice is this Mimco one which has a subtle rocker edge and also conveniently matches a couple of my leather jackets.

Do you have a favourite designer?

Oh that’s hard! I don’t really have a favourite designer per se. Can I say, instead, that I love designers who create classic pieces with a twist and my wardrobe reflects a very eclectic range of designers from all around the world. I often throw some vintage into the mix to spice things up!

What can’t you leave home without?

My sketch pad – this is where I jot all my ideas and inspirations. It travels with me everywhere and you will often see me sitting in a corner in a café or airport sketching the next big Kagi design.

It’s a bit embarrassing but I also have to say my YSL concealer – in fashion you never know when you might be invited to an event that requires a couple of pre-party touch-ups!  Less makeup is always more and concealer is truly God’s photoshop!

What don’t you need?
Hmmm…. I would say that everything in my bag is essential, but I am sure my fiancé would disagree! If I had to lose something it would be my felt tip pens – but they are, oh so handy!

What’s the most embarrassing thing to have fallen out of your handbag?
It would have to be tampons rolling out of my bag in an all male business meeting. I then remedied the situation by offering them to my colleagues!

Surprisingly none of them wanted any! Ha ha!  Oh well, sigh, what’s a girl to do!
