Stereophonics – Keep Calm and Carry On

I have long been a fan of Stereophonics but when I heard their latest album I was a little unimpressed.  They have once again decided to play it safe so it sounds just like their other six albums, I was really hoping for something different this time around.  There isn’t even one stand out track like their past albums. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad CD, it’s something I will continue to listen too but once you have heard one song you have heard them all.

Gloss Rating: 3 out of 5

kid-sister.jpgKid Sister – Ultra Violet

What a cutie this girl is – although she’d probably smack you one for saying. This album is a blend of old-school hip hop with early ‘90s dance music. Seriously, any of you ‘80s kids reading this may fondly remember Technotronic; I admit it, I do and Kid Sister takes me back to all those good times. It’s catchy, upbeat, singalong fun and it’s sure to get any party started. Love it, this girl deserves to go far, look out Lady Gaga.

vampire-weekend-contra.jpgVampire Weekend – Contra

Four Brooklyn boys started something with their first album – a war between the lovers and the haters of their supposedly 'pretentious preppy' stylings and lyrics. Luckily, I came to review this album at this with no knowledge of their divisiveness, their haters – or their lovers. Free of any judgement other than that the fact I had heard one song and liked it. So now to Contra – and the first thing that comes to mind when describing this is, it’s a bit like, ohhhh indie-rock meets Paul Simon’s Graceland and the result is pretty cool. This peppy album is light-hearted, quirky, unique and actually quite good fun with enough bounce to make it more than just breezy background music. I think in this case, I’m going to call myself a fan!

Gloss Rating: 3 and 3/4 out of 5

cocoon_cover.jpgCocoon – My Friends All Died In A Plane Crash

Cocoon are an English-language folk-pop duo from France and I must be mellowing out a bit in my old age (which is probably a good thing) but for some reason I am finding myself heavily into acoustic folk at the moment. The *cough 'hippy' inside me is really breaking through. This is the debut album from the girl/guy team and is an absolute delight and a joy to the ears. I actually get goosebumps when I listen to it as I enjoy it that much. It’s ‘lovely’ personified. Perfect to put your feet up to and enjoy a chilled summer on the deck to accompany the sound of cicadas… or the soundtrack to your next VW Combi road trip.

Gloss Rating: 4 and a ½ out of 5
