fall_out_boy.jpgFall Out Boy visited our shores and held a press conference at ACG Parnell College so the students put some questions to them… Here’s what the students wanted to find out about Fall Out Boy.

You look so comfortable when you perform, do you feel comfortable on stage?
Patrick: It’s really easy to do something you are comfortable with in front of everybody – this feels a bit more awkward right now than being on stage.
Joe: There’s something surreal about being on stage.
Pete: We can always hide behind fire on stage. It’s easy to be confident when there are explosions going off!

If you could be in any other band which would you be in?
Andy: I wish I could play drums for Andrew WK someday, he’s such an awesome guy, but I’m happy in Fall Out Boy.
Patrick: If I could be in another band in an imaginary way where I played in a different band and a different instrument I would play drums for Prince in Prince’s revolution.

What message do you try to get across through your music?

Patrick: Everyone who is in this room is going out into the world after one of the most selfish generations in history, as kids we were taught to go to school to get the right job so you can have the right house and car, but the thing to take away from it is that it doesn’t really matter about those things, it’s more about what you give back to society.
Pete: Sometimes you need the right car!

How was it to work with the different artists on your record?
Joe: It was awesome. We didn’t work in the room with them at all, it was done by the magic of email. Lil Wayne did it within an hour or something.
Pete: Yeah, Lil Wayne is from Planet Lil Wayne, I asked him if he wanted to do the part and he phoned me at 4:00am and wanted to work on it at that time of the morning and I really had no idea what was going on, but then he did the part and it was awesome.

What would make you stop making music?
Joe: If it stopped being fun anymore.
Patrick: If it became a thing where the only incentive was to make money we probably wouldn’t do it anymore. If it stopped being fulfilling we wouldn’t do it.

How long are you planning to be in this business for?
Andy: 100 years!
Joe: This goes back to what we were saying before about what would make us stop making music – if it stopped being fun and it became a job you hate.
Patrick: If it becomes a job where money was the end result. You could drop out of the business and still play music. A band like Pearl Jam has demonstrated that.
Andy: Business be darned.

What advice would you give to a new band?
Patrick: Enjoy music because you will play shows where no-one is there, you will play shows where you don’t get paid and don’t eat and you will tour where you sleep on people’s floors and if you don’t like music and are just there to pick up girls and make money it’s going to be a long hard road.
Joe: Just like everything else people will tell you you can’t do it or you should do it the way other band have done it before you, but you just need to do it your own way.
Patrick: Learn to take constructive criticism because my career has been much better for learning to do that.

Is there anything you don’t want your mum to know?

Andy: A lot of things!
Joe: It’s funny, you find out your parents know way more about things you don’t want them to know about than you think!
Pete: A while ago, there was an internet debacle involving pictures and things – I won’t go into it, but my mum found out and emailed me and said “Be more careful” and she still makes me French Toast so I think we are on good terms again…
