hollie-smith.jpgIn 2007, Hollie Smith captivated the nation with her debut album Long Player which went double platinum in New Zealand. Soon after, she was snapped up by the American recording giant Blue Note Records, who promised to take Long Player global. It never happened. A drawn-out legal battle ensued and Hollie has consequently gone broke attempting to buy back her material from Blue Note.

But Hollie is a fighter. And you can’t bring a strong Kiwi girl down.  So now she’s back with her new album Humour and the Misfortune of Others – and it’s gone straight to number one on iTunes.

Her first track, Mama, is as soulful and smouldering as you would expect from the girl who mesmerized us all with Bathe in the River. And while I am not usually someone who falls for the hype of the first release, this is certainly my favourite track. The album has a bit more of a desolate mood than Long Player – not surprising given the distress of the last two years – so if you’re not one for a woeful ballad you might need to listen in small doses.

All-in-all, it’s an expressive and charming album and an essential addition to any kiwi music collection.

Hollie is touring next month – be sure to support her by getting to a gig in city near you.
