Summer Lovin': Favourite Summer Romance Films

summer-romance-films.jpgThere’s nothing like a summer romance right? Especially when Hollywood gets their hands on it!  The Gloss team has chosen our favourite summer romance movies, so, if your boyfriend is no Channing Tatum or Ryan Gosling, at least you can live vicariously through these epic Hollywood romances...

dear-johm.jpgDear John (2010)
Starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfreid, this is an epic tale of two loves separated by war (and based on a novel by who else but the master of romance, Nicholas Sparks).  Tatum plays a soldier who falls in love with a sweet, conservative college student while on leave for the summer at his beachside hometown.  When he has to return to his military tour, the lovers communicate via letters.  Is there anything more romantic than a love letter?

grease.jpgGrease (1978)
The perennial favourite starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, with a soundtrack that pretty much everyone knows all the words to!  Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny have a summer romance, but when they discover they will be attending the same high school in the fall, will they be able to get over their differences and rekindle their romance?  Well it helps that Sandy gets a bad-girl makeover and rocks that leather cat suit at the end of the film...

dirty-dancing.jpgDirty Dancing (1987)
One of my favourite movies of all time! Besides coining one of the most memorable movie quotes ever (“Nobody puts baby in a corner!”), Dirty Dancing has all the ingredients for a perfect Hollywood summer fling.  Baby (Jennifer Grey) goes to summer camp with her uptight family and falls in love with the camp’s badass dancing teacher (Patrick Swayze – RIP).  Plenty of hot dancing scenes ensue, topped off by one of the best ever scenes to end a movie.

the-notebook.jpgThe Notebook (2004)
Another movie based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are star-crossed lovers separated by social barriers.  Ryan’s character Noah is poor, but opens up McAdams’ rich-girl character, Allie, to a world of possibilities and a sense of freedom.   Featuring one of the most romantic movie scenes ever (that kiss in the rain), and the ultimate romantic tear-jerker – definitely a must for romantic summer viewing.

my-girl.jpgMy Girl (1991)
Starring Anna Chlumsky as Vada Sultenfuss, daughter of a funeral director, and Macauley Culkin, the 11 year olds share their first kiss together – too cute!  Combined with Vada’s unrequited love for her teacher, Mr Bixler, this one makes the list because it just reminds us of being young – and a first kiss, awkward as it is, is kinda romantic don’t you think?
