Scott Pilgrim Smashes his way through the cinemas this week as the takes on the world and his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes!

Scott (played by Michael Cera) is a bass guitarist in an unknown band Sex Bob-Omb. At 23, he is in-between jobs, trying to get over the pain of rejection from his ex-girlfriend. One night Scott dreams of the mysterious girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who comes to Toronto trying to escape her past. Although he is dating the 17 year old high school girl Knives Chau (much to the disgust of his friends) his thoughts quickly turn to Ramona when he sees her in a library, and realises she actually exists.

As he gets to know Ramona, they both learn to understand and get over each other's pasts. For every ex that Scott meets (and destroys in an epic battle of power and wits) he learns more about Ramona's past. Interestingly, each of her ex-boyfriends seems to have a special power, with odd characters from a psychic vegan to an Indian mystic. Luckily, Scott steps up to the game with some powerful moves of his own, resulting in battles reminiscent of the video game Teken.

The visuals are spectacular. The music and sound are conveyed as light and text on the screen (and there is a lot of sound given that Sex Bob-Omb is competing in battle of the bands). The simple Crash!Bam!Wham! visual motifs and the reverberating text and coloured light from the musical instruments make you feel that the music is alive. At one point the band's music even manifests as a giant gorilla in order to take on their challengers who happen to be from Ramona's past.

clip2.jpgThere are a lot of “in jokes” throughout the movie so having a little bit of a geeky gamer side would defiantly help. While it's interesting to know that their band name is actually a tribute to an enemy from ‘Super Mario Bros’, or that a segment of music is from ‘The Legend of Zelda’ you don’t necessarily need to know these facts to enjoy the movie. The comic feel throughout is fun, the characters are interesting and seeing real life enemies exploding into coins is brilliant.

Gloss rating: 5/5 - RAD!
