colganjenny.jpgGloss chats to much loved chicklit author Jenny Colgan about a few of her favourite things…

What is your favourite way to pass time?
Reading a book in the bath, going for a cocktail with my husband, lunch with my girlfriends, or tickling the children.

Your favourite food?
Ooh, tough one. Cheese. Toast. Cheese on toast.

The best place to go on holiday?
I honestly don't care where I go on holiday as long as it's with people I like! One of the nicest holidays I've ever had was when my husband and I went to Portofino in Italy - we swam in a huge swimming pool, stayed in a gorgeous hotel, had a walk around the port, went to the most sensational restaurant, took a moonlit walk, had a tour round the local markets with some shopping - all in twenty four hours!

Your favourite book?
Hard to choose my favourite book, but I am very fond of A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving and Middlemarch by George Eliot.

What makes you want to get up in the morning?
When you have young children, the fact that they wake you up far too early is entirely ameliorated by how utterly delighted they are to see you, every single morning. I'm assured this changes when they get older, so I'm trying to enjoy it now.

The CD you put on when you want to dance?
At the moment in our house we like MGMT and Alphabeat. Historically I like Madonna for dancing.

Your favourite time of the day?
Like many mums (I have three under five), I do quite like 7.01pm when the kids give you that last cuddle and go to sleep!

Who would you love to meet one day? Why?
I would have loved to meet my favourite writer Douglas Adams, but he died tragically young. It would be nice to say you'd met Barack Obama, Neil Armstrong, Doctor Who or Nelson Mandela!

Your favourite film?
I love Shakespeare in Love. I think it's a nearly perfect film; funny, clever, pacy, intriguing, romantic and in the end, utterly, heartbreakingly sad. I never get tired of watching it.

What is the best thing in life?
Love, family, friends and rent. Everything else is just admin.
