reading-into-things.jpgGrowing up, I can remember always being told by my parents, grandparents and teachers to read more. I used to wonder why, when I know everything already and if I don’t know it then surely I will learn it from the television? How wrong I was, and as I have grown older I read probably a book a fortnight and not necessarily to learn more, but because I find it enjoyable.  Unfortunately though, not everyone feels the same and although I can’t believe I am saying this myself after years of ignoring it, but no matter what age you are you should really read more! Here is why:

Reading a good novel provides an escape from your everyday life. You have the opportunity to enter another world, other countries, cultures and become attached to fictional characters. There is no limit to the places that books can take you.

You need to concentrate in order to read and understand what you are reading, this helps your concentration span. This is particularly effective for young children and can make a difference to how they concentrate during school lessons.

Studies have proven that if you do not use your memory, then it will gradually decrease. Reading requires remembering many details and therefore exercises your memory muscle.

Reading improves your vocabulary, writing skills and spelling. You will come across many words that you may not know the meaning of, so keep a dictionary on hand so you can look them up and learn the meaning of each word.

Reading can reduce stress by taking your mind off your own problems and life’s stresses. It is like exercising, a complete escape.

Developing a habit for reading novels will mean reading the required books for your chosen course at college, university or in your job will be much easier and more enjoyable.

Reading is an inexpensive hobby, joining a library allows you to hire several books at a time for no cost.

Reading to your child from a young age will help them to develop an interest in books and reading books will become habit. There is no end to the benefits that reading can have on children.
