Christmas Tree Decorating Tips

Christmas is just over two months away, and before we know it people everywhere will be dragging Christmas tree’s out of storage or be heading off to buy one.

As children we always had a tree, and decorating it was half the fun of Christmas. Unfortunately my enthusiasm has dwindled over the years, and my attempts have been pretty pathetic to say the least. It’s always a bit ‘slap dash’ in my house, but this year it’s going to be different!

Why? Well, after watching a professional tree decorator work her magic at the Farmers Christmas launch last week I’ve been inspired. It was amazing how she transformed the tree into a festive delight anyone would be proud to have in their living room.

If like me you need some guidance and inspiration check out our top ten Christmas Tree decorating tips – it’s not as hard as it looks! If I can do it, so can you.

Lights, lights and more lights
This is not the thing to skimp on. 1,000 lights minimum per tree as many get covered once decorations go on.

Take your time
Doing things slowly over a few days will always get a better result than rushing through just to get it finished.

Prepare all decorations
This is so everything is ready to go before you start. Collate decorations and unravel lights.

Fluff your branches!
If you have an artificial tree, take the time to prep each branch before to put it up. Once the tree is assembled then go over once more to make sure everything is pointing the right way.

Buy a minimum of 12 of each type of decoration
This will give you maximum impact on your tree.

Mix it up
Mix cheaper decorations with expensive ones as well as small and large sized decorations.

Start with the lights
Test all lights before putting them up and make sure to spread them evenly around the tree.

Attaching decorations
Use wire decoration hooks (available from Farmers) or fishing line to attach decorations to your tree.
The gold and silver strings that decorations come with can be distracting and messy.

Start big and finish small
Use your biggest decorations first and then top of the look by adding small delicates last.

Cover the stand or tree base with a skirt or gorgeous fabric
If the room is high enough, try elevating your tree on a small table for more impact.

Happy Christmas Tree decorating!

The ideas are great, but i don't have space. I will probably buy a ready decorated small one (1-2 feet tall) from the warehouse.
