in-flight-beauty.jpgThe security measures put in place about taking liquids onto international flights in your hand luggage are a real bee in any beauty addict's bonnet. We look at how you can be a jet-set beauty...

Here's the lowdown on what you can and can't take, plus we've compiled a list of the top seven essential items to ensure your are comfortable in-flight and walk off the plane looking like a million dollars.

The rules:

  • All liquids, aerosols and gels must be in containers of 100ml or less.
  • Passengers must carry their 100ml containers in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag of 1 litre volume (this is a re-sealable sandwich bag like those available at your local supermarket).
  • Each passenger, including children, will be allowed to carry on one, 1 litre transparent plastic bag.
  • The plastic bag must be re-sealable and presented separately from all other carry-on baggage at the screening point.

This includes: creams or ointments - including face creams, foundation, perfumes, mascara and liquid eyeliner, and lip gloss and lip balm.

  • There are exceptions for personal medications, baby products and dietary supplements in liquid, aerosol or gel form.

In-flight beauty essentials:

We suggest you buy 100ml containers from a plastics shop - make sure they close tightly as a leaking moisturiser is noone's friend. You can fit about seven of the containers in the one litre bags. When filling the containers with your product by hand, using a small funnel may help.

Moisturiser
The air inside the plane can wreak havoc on your skin so you need a really nourishing moisturiser. Go for a night time formula as they tend to be thicker and more hydrating. We recommend the Age Re-Perfect Pro-Calcium Night Cream from L'Oreal. It is intended for very mature skin, but it is a great nourishing in flight cream for women of any age.

Eye cream
Don't arrive at your destination with extra wrinkles caused by dehydration and tiredness. Apply an eye cream several times during the flight - we like the L'Oreal Paris Collagen Filler Eye as it really hydrates the delicate skin around the eye, smoothes the skin, and the iridescent formula acts as a concealer to cover dark circles.

Lip balm
If you take one item on the plane this is it. A product like Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is perfect, and easily trasnferred into the 100ml containers. You can also use it to nourish other dry areas such as hands and elbows.

Rose water
This little beauty is great from everything. Dab it all over your face to freshen up, of pat around the eyes to reduce puffiness. Sprinkle onto your plane pillow to drift off into a luxurious, lightly scented sleep. It is also a great antiseptic so dab onto any blemishes that often pop up during a flight.

Hand cream
Just like your face, your hands can really dry out during the flight. I love slathering on hand cream all day long but obviously the 100ml containers are not going to hold enough hand cream to suffice. Instead take an oil product like Bio Oil, Rose Hip Oil, or even Olive Oil. These products are all fantastic for repairing dry hands, and a little oil goes a long way, so it is far more economical.

Concealer
Stepping off the plane into the fluorescent lights of the airport is never good for one's self confidence or mood! Applying a touch of concealer before the plane lands will cover up any dark circles and blemishes you developed during the flight, and hopefully make you feel a little less like the walking dead. A liquid concealer is your best option - try the Living Nature concealer for really great consistency and coverage.

Cream blush or bronzer
Yes - applying makeup to get off an airplane may seem like the height of vanity, but we strongly maintain that the new lease on life a quick makeover can give you restores your sanity slightly and can make you feel better all round. Thus you can worry about more important things, like checking out the Lancome counter in Duty Free and finding your luggage, rather than being conscious of how terrible you look.

Dab a little cream blush or bronzer onto the apples of your cheeks, and onto the brow bone to restore a little colour and achieve a really fresh, healthy look. The Maybelline Mousse bronzers and blush are great affordable options, and Lancome Magie Blush gives you a fantastic, dewy glow.
