park-rk.jpgGloss Editor Je t'aime chatted to hair maestro, Richard Kavanagh about Fashion Week hair, the best looks for Spring/Summer and picks his brains on the top tips for healthy hair...

You were the man behind the gorgeous French twist at the Park show at Fashion Week... How did you come up with the look?

I met with Jo, the designer behind the Park label and also Chris who was producing the show - they told me that their inspiration was Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly character from Breakfast at Tiffany's. So I took the classic French twist and made it sexier and a bit more rock 'n' roll, by adding volume and a sweeping fringe.

How did you achieve the look for Park?

It was so easy to create - leaving the front and sides of the hair free, the back of the hair was twirled into a French twist which ended just below the crown. The crown and sides were then backcombed to create more of a beehive effect, the sides were secured back into the top of the French twist with a pin, and with the front we brought the hair across the forehead to create the appearance of a side fringe. This was also pinned to the top of the French twist.

The final touch was to put small black bows in the side of the hair.

What is your favourite hair look for spring and summer?

Definitely curls! With the curl you can create a look that suits clothing from all eras and, unless you have pin-straight hair, obviously it is a much lower maintenance look, especially when you are spending time at the beach.

What is the best way to get curls?

Curling tongs. Just because you can curl with straightening irons doesn't mean that you should - the result with irons looks too contrived and too done - you get girls walking around with Barbie hair. Curling tongs are great as they create a natural curl or ringlet to where-ever you want them and they don't look overly styled.

What products are indispensable to a good hair-kit?

A good can of hairspray is essential for everyone. I really like Redken Workforce 09, but to be honest, the best way to know what works for you is to ask the advice of your hair stylist - everyone has a different hair type and some sprays will be too heavy or too light, it all depends on your needs.

Do you have any final tips for healthy hair?

Women do this all the time, but the absolute worst thing that you can do to your hair is to rub it dry between a towel! The vigorous rubbing smashes the cuticle layer open, leaving the hair fragile and open to moisture loss, particularly if you are going to style the hair with hot tools. You should gently squeeze the hair with a towel.

I would also advise women who style with hot tools to look for something that will help protect the hair cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair structure and lay over the hair in a pattern a bit like roof tiles. When open they can lose moisture out of the hair and leave it prone to damage. However, negative ions close the cuticle of the hair, making it look shiny and locking in natural moisture, so products and styling tools that distribute negative ions to the hair are beneficial for keeping it in top condition.
