Since we are now looking ahead to a beautiful 2010, we thought it was the perfect time to recap on all the biggest and hottest beauty trends of 09.
Last year brought us some great new products, jaw dropping new celeb looks - not always in a good way - and some crazy trends that were never destined to be seen anywhere but on the catwalk a.k.a the brow less beauty…
The fringe: Be it a full thick blunt number or a choppy asymmetrical cut, anyone who was anyone sported a fringe last year, even the top fashion houses were sporting fringes on their runways, this look from Gucci is to die for. But do be warned, after a good night’s sleep your fringe will be standing on end so if you don’t have time to wash or straighten it every morning we suggest you stay away.
Black nail polish: Black nail polish was popping up all over the place last year, from the beach to the Golden Globes it’s a look that will take you anywhere and all the hottest fashionistas still love it.
The lob (long bob): Long gone was the asymmetrical bob of 2008 aka the Victoria Beckham hairdo, in 09 celebs decided to grow out their bob or chop their locks off into a sexy long bob also known as the lob. It’s a cut that sits between the bottom of your chin and the top of shoulders, the blunter the better. It’s the perfect versatile cut that’s not too long or too short and it looks just as hot sleek and straight or with messy beach curls.
Eco beauty: Last year really saw the rise of clean, green, eco friendly products and we ladies couldn’t get enough. For those of you who do prefer your beauty products to be ‘au naturale’ there are more choices today than ever before – and the products are amazing. Keeping yourself beautiful all while looking after Mother Nature is def win win. Check out our bumper guide to the best of natural beauty.
Side braids: Braided hair was one of the most obvious beauty trends last year. It’s a cute way to add some girliness to your look and is perfect for beach hair that you just don’t have time to fix.
Hippy headbands: This trend is super easy to wear - a summery boho chic look that is perfect with sandals and your favourite maxi dress, or punk up some black jeans and a biker jacket. If you haven’t already tried it out you're not too late! The best thing about the hippy headband trend is that they look even better on messy just rolled out of bed hair so there is no time spent fussing in front of the mirror, just throw it on and you're good to go! Check out some of our fav celebs sporting their hippy headbands.
High bun: The high bun certainly isn’t for the shy, such a severe style means all the attention is on your face, so flawless skin and confidence is a must. The best thing about the high bun is that once it’s done, it’s very low maintenance, no there’s need to spend the day fussing over stray hairs.
Bold brows: Strong and defined brows made their way back into our lives last year and I couldn’t have been happier. Don't recoil in horror at the thought of bushy, 80's style 'power-brows', the 2009 version is chic, and dressed up. Yes, it takes a little commitment, but this trend is here to stay. You can tame full brows with a brow gel like billion dollar brows brow gel from OFF Wax. Fluoro nail colour: Nothing screams ‘happy, happy, joy, joy’ quite like neon pink nails. We are still loving the trend for summery uber bright talons. If you think the look is a little bold for your nails or you feel it is a little too ‘youth’ for you, pop it on your toes – it’s simply gorgeous with strappy sandals.
Sexy science: One of the most exciting things about the beauty industry is the amazing new technologies that the clever people in white coats come up with to keep us looking younger for longer. In 2009, Olay bought us peptides, Lancome delivered products that are the result of 20 years of stem cell research and quite by accident a glaucoma treatment resulted in eyelashes that grew like weeds – et voila, we now have eyelash growth serums. We can’t wait to find out what developments will come out of 2010!
