Collagen Beauty Bed: Week One

collagen-beauty-bed.jpgLast week, I told our Gloss newsletter readers that I would be trying out a revolutionary new product, the Collagen Beauty Bed, available at Solaris Tanning in Ponsonby and Botany Downs in Auckland.   So today, I met with the lovely Alicia Berridge, director of Solaris Tanning, to be a very-willing guinea pig to test-drive the bed.

So what is the Collagen Beauty Bed?  In a nutshell, it’s a bed that works by works by emitting visible light, which is highly beneficial to the skin.  It is a non-invasive cutting-edge technology for full body skin rejuvenation. And the crucial part? This light contains no UVA or UVB rays, therefore is completely safe for your skin.

I’m 24, so I don’t have too many skin issues, but I do have a few problem areas.  In the last year or so, I have noticed the gradual appearance of fine lines on my forehead, and around my mouth.  I also suffer from the occasional pimple, and would like to see an improvement in the texture of my skin, as there are a few rough bumpy areas on my face and décolletage.  So I am interested to see if I will see results in these areas.

So....how does it work?
I’m going to need to get a little scientific on you, to give you some background information, so bear with me.

Studies have proven that light within this part of the spectrum (between 600 and 700 nm) penetrates to the bottom of the dermis, stimulating the fibroblasts (types of cells) that produce collagen and repair elastin fibres to help keep the skin firm and plump, giving a more youthful appearance.

The collagen lamps used in Solaris Tanning’s Collagen Beauty Beds also improve tone and texture, control and diminish pigmentation and age spots and reduce pore size, to encourage vibrant looking skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.  Sounds promising!

The light also stimulates blood circulation aiding in detoxification, while increasing oxygen and nutrients to the skin.  This reduces inflammation and enhances the wound repair process.  Skin cells renew from 150 -200% faster when exposed to this light wavelength.   Alicia also told me that the light is also highly beneficial to aid in treating and reducing acne, as well as acne scars and other types of scarring on the body.

Collagen lamp treatment, unlike other skin rejuvenation technologies (e.g. laser therapy) doesn’t not cause any skin abrasions, burns or cracks – instead it gently reduces the symptoms of skin ageing.

Observational studies of the bed have shown that more than half of all users noticed a marked improvement in the wrinkles and lines on their face and décolleté after just ten treatments, and improvements were visible to all participants after 30 treatments.  In addition, all participants confirmed a significant improvement in the firmness and elasticity of the skin over their entire bodies.

So, armed with this knowledge, I went for my first session.  The Collagen Beauty Bed looks pretty much exactly like a sunbed – you lie down in it, pull the top down on you and you’re away.  The ideal length of treatments is 20 minutes, so I am signed up for twenty of these sessions, and after that, I am hoping to see a marked improvement in my skin.

After a relaxing 20 minutes in the bed, I emerged.  I immediately noticed that my skin felt significantly softer to the touch.  I wasn’t sure if this was perhaps just my imagination, but when I asked Alicia about it, she said that this was to be expected, and after my second session it would be even more noticeable.

So, I’m off to a promising start – noticing an effect after one session is definitely a good sign.  I’m going in again in a week, and for regular sessions after that.  I’ll be updating you on my progress week by week.
