Jane Iredale is the founder of Iredale Mineral Cosmetics. She was the first to supply the aesthetics industry with a full-line of makeup based on minerals and the first to see the potential of offering physicians a makeup that was good for the skin. Gloss finds out about the benefits of minerals and her favourite beauty products and tips... Image

What made you decide to develop a makeup range?

I came from a television and film background and saw how makeup negatively affected the skin - especially on actors and models filming under hot lights all day and receiving constant makeup retouches. This was clogging their skin and once I started looking into the ingredients used in standard makeup, I realised why it caused so many problems. I set out to develop a line that would not only make you feel good to wear it, but would actually be beneficial for the skin.'

What are the benefits of mineral makeup?

The micronized minerals we use offer a natural, healthy alternative to conventional cosmetics.  Inert minerals and natural colour pigments means there are no chemical dyes,  or preservatives but give remarkable protection from the sun, with our PurePressed powder rated as high as SPF 20.  Our products contain no fillers such as talc, and present virtually no allergy risk as they are completely free of sensitizers like perfumes.

The minerals also provide complete coverage for skin conditions such as acne and rosacea, and redness following treatments such as chemical peels and laser resurfacing and are non-comedogenic, allowing the skin to breathe and function normally.

What are the most common makeup mistakes that women make?

The most common mistake in wearing minerals is that people wear too much because they aren't used to pure pigment.  Another common mistake is putting on too much mascara.  This can have the effect of adding age to the face and pulling the focus from the eyes.  Another common mistake is that most women don't spend enough time grooming their brows which are crucial for balancing the face and making the eyes appear more important.

You can take your favourite five essentials to a desert island... what would you take?

My Warm Sienna PurePressed Base and LipDrink.
Our Brush Shampoo which I presently use on my hair and I could use as a body wash.
Our new Spring/Summer Brush-Me Bronze SPF which is SPF 30 and a powder and would be light and effective to wear.
My toothbrush!

What are your top 5 beauty tips?

Always use a good moisturiser.
Brush our minerals on top for a skin that's protected and natural-looking.
Pay special attention to well-shaped brows.
Blend blush well.
Use a lip pencil to define lips and as a base for a gloss or lipstick.

What advice would you give if someone wants to up their glamour quotient using makeup?

Make sure that your foundation is a perfect match.  Then get expert advice on what colours enhance your eyes.  It's important to find someone you trust who understands what you want and doesn't want to impose a look on you.  Makeup should enhance your natural beauty.  I personally don't like the expression 'makeover'.  We're not trying to make someone over but to make them look they way they are, only better.

What is the best way to match a foundation properly?

Go to natural light and test the colour on your jaw line.  If it disappears, it's the right shade.  If you find it difficult to look at your jaw line, then try the shade on your cheekbone.  It's always best to get professional help in the beginning.
