ImageBeautiful nails are one of the most important aspects of a woman's grooming. Whether they are short and practical or long and glamorous, your nails are always on show.

No matter how fantastic your hair, makeup and wardrobe may be, bitten or chipped nails destroy the picture!

The first rule for healthy nails is to keep them relatively short with the tips shaped into a gentle curve, as this will prevent breaking and splitting. Excessive manicuring can injure the nail and damage the cuticle, particularly if sharp ended or metal instruments are used.

Evidence of this are ridges or dents along the nails and ragged cuticles. Consistent use of nail polish, together with the solvents needed to remove it, will dry out the nail and eventually leave it discoloured. The most beneficial thing you can do for your nails is to moisturize the cuticle daily with a rich oil such as almond or avocado, to keep them healthy and supple. Always file your nails in one direction with an emery board, as cutting them will weaken the nail and cause it to flake.

The most fashionable manicure this winter will see your nails short and square, painted in dark, rich colours. Deep reds, burgundy and black nail polish have made a huge comeback and look great as a compliment to the glam-punk eye makeup we've seen on the catwalk for the new season.

For the perfect finish always start with a clear base coat, as this will prevent pigments being absorbed into the nail base. Dark colours require two or three coats (along with a steady hand) followed by a layer of top coat to seal in the colour and add lustre.

For longer nails stay away from bright colours and stick with sheer, natural shades of buff and taupe. Long red talons are one aspect of the '80s we definitely don't need to revisit!
