ImageMichelle Ogden of Rodney Wayne, reveals how you can get the best curls out of your wavy hair...

Hi Michelle... I have thick, slightly wavy hair. I dye it every two to three months at a hairdresser's. My question is this: I would love curls for when I am going out- but I can never achieve them with my curling tongs or straighteners. If I do get a decent curl it falls out pretty quickly, even with hairspray. Any tips? Do I need GHDs for this? Being a poor student I can't afford them! Thanks.

Hi,

I can understand your frustration with your hair not holding the curl, especially if you have a slight wave in your hair anyway.

Certainly the easiest way to curl wavy hair is with curling tongs. What you need though is to dry a good holding product such as mousse or moulding gel into the hair.

Here are a few tips for drying your hair to hold curl:

Shampoo and condition your hair, towel dry and then apply a protection product to protect your hair.

Use a diffuser - this is a black saucer-like attachment that fits onto the nozzle of your blow dryer. You can buy these at salons or chemists or even some department stores. Run the diffuser in an upward motion to give the hair body at the roots until dry. A diffuser is inexpensive to buy and changes the strong air flow from a straightening aid, to just heat which keeps hair curly. This maximises curl and when dry you can just tong the odd section if desired.

Towel dry your hair well after shampooing, and then section by section twist hair and dry, pointing the hairdryer down the hair cuticle not against it. As you finish each section clip it up in the curl formation to cool while you carry on with the rest of the hair. This sets the hair and helps it to stay.

Though your hair is wavy it is also thick so it maybe very heavy. Talk to your stylist about a small amount of layering to lighten the weight of the hair and stop it pulling out the curl.

There is also a fantastic cutting technique around at the moment for curl where sections of the hair are layered and the sections beside these pieces are left long. This gives an amazing textured result but still keeps the look of length within the hairstyle. This is fantastic for encouraging curl.

Hope this helps and also saves on your pocket!

I have a way to go before this goal is achieved.
I too have thick, wavy hair and one day really hope to leave my hair long with curls..

Thanks Michelle for your response here, I too have been blessed by a Rodney Wayne hairdresser she too is guiding me to the look I want, now I know also what to ask of her at my next appointment.
