skin-detox-resized.jpgSkin is our largest body organ, yet it's so often under-appreciated and undervalued.

Our skin protects, shields, sensors, eliminates and communicates. And with all the jobs it has to do, a good detox every now and then can go a long way.

So, this week we take a look at six different ways to improve your skin's health.

1. Exercise: Working up a sweat opens up the pores and releases toxins from the skin. Just remember to shower straight after exercising; if sweat and debris is left on the skin too long it clogs pores.

2. Steam: If you belong to a gym that has a steam room, jump in there for a few minutes for an all-over skin detoxifier. If not, steam your face over a bowl of boiling water (don’t get too close); throw a tea towel over your head and add a couple of drops of essential oil.

3. Microdermabrasion: This professional treatment uses crystals and a gentle vacuum-like suction to open and thoroughly clean the pores.

4. Face Mask: Add a detoxifying mask to your face for fifteen minutes to open up pores and thoroughly clean the skin of excess oil, dirt and makeup grime.

5. Hot yoga: Try a class of Bikram. The yoga room is set to around 30C, which means you’ll sweat – a lot. Not only will the heat detoxify your skin, some of the upside-down postures will help bring blood to the face, which is believed to help ward off premature ageing.

6. Find an infrared sauna:  Some spas and beauty salons have them, (they’re often referred to as ‘Detox Boxes’). You’ll sit in it and you’ll hate it after around 20 minutes but you’ll be sweating out all those toxins not to mention a few pounds!
