Gloss chatted to Nikki Lovrich, Head Makeup artist for the Jane
Iredale Mineral Makeup team who designed a look to kick off the Air New
Zealand Fashion Week 2008 Verge Breakthrough show…
How would you describe the look did you designed for the Verge Breakthrough show?
I designed the makeup as a showcase for the Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup range. The look was High Glamour but very wearable, with deep smokey eyes, sculpted cheeks and nude, glossy lips. All the emphasis was on the eyes while the skin was kept sheer and natural with just a dusting of mineral powder to even out the complexion.

How did you create the High Glamour look?
The eyes were created by smudging a black pencil around the eye and then blending it out with a charcoal eye shadow from their new Winter Palette for 09.
Jane Iredale’s 24 karat gold dust was applied to the inner lid as a highlight and rose gold 24 karat gold dust was dusted across the brow bone to add contour.
Liquid eyeliner was then added for extra depth, followed by lashings of Pure Lengthening mascara. Cheeks were sculpted with their new InTouch cream blush and a touch of 24 karat gold dust was brushed across the cheekbones to make them stand out on the runway.
Lips were lined with a natural pencil and then shined up with Wild Apple PureGloss, which created a perfect balance to the smouldering eyes. We changed this out quickly backstage to Melon PureGloss for Emma’s portion of the show and then took it back to Wild Apple again for Ana Steele.
What advice would you give to someone wishing to replicate the look?
Anyone can wear smokey eyes, but the key is in the application. If the black is too dark it can look very harsh and instantly aging. Make sure your blending is perfect and avoid harshly drawn lines. If you prefer a lighter look, smokey eyes can be created with soft grey or mauve shadows, which still look dramatic and are much easier to apply. Always balance dark eye with pale lips, or vice versa.
What are your must-have products?
Blusher is the most important product you can use - it instantly brightens the face. My kit is full of rose & peachy toned blushers that I blend with bronzer to add life to the skin and I love the Jane Iredale In Touch Cream Blushers.
Next to blusher I would say that Mascara is essential as no look is complete without a flick of the wand!
In the summer a tinted moisturizer with a sunscreen is a life saver for your skin - plus it adds a golden glow – Jane Iredale have just released a new product called Dream Tint and it has all of the above properties and is so perfect for summer!
I have also recently discovered Jane Iredale’s mineral powder foundation Amazing Base which I am loving for its speed of application and gorgeous luminous finish. The makeup team all used that at the Verge Show and the models looked wonderful!
