FashioNZ hair guru Michelle Ogden gives 'Desrae' some helpful advice for assisting her daughter in planning her hairstyle for the up-coming school ball... Ball Hair

Hi Michelle, my 17 year old daughter has medium to long straight dark brown hair and has a fringe which is swept to the side of her face. She is about to attend her first ball. What hairstyle/s would best suit her or is there a good website to go to to get some ideas? Thanks-Desrae

Hi Desrae,
How exciting to be helping your daughter planning for her ball . It is difficult to advise on an exact hairstyle without first seeing your daughter; however there are a few things that she should take into consideration before choosing a hairstyle and then booking in with a hairdresser. Most importantly, what she is wearing must come into consideration when choosing a style. The general rule is to complement the dress with the hair and provide a balance to the whole silhouette.

There are a few basic rules that are generally followed for fantastic results:

Backless dress
Put the detail of the hairstyle at the nape of the neck, either Spanish style with a bun or plaits or if you are wearing your hair out, you could add detail at the nape of the neck by catching cascading curls into a knot or using a diamante clasp.

Voluminous dress or wide puffed skirt
Try to add some volume in the hair to match the skirt or width of the dress. This will balance out the silhouette and avoids the hips looking too wide, and creates a curvaceous result instead.

High necked dress
This usually means hair up to show off the detail of the dress but it could be combined with soft tendrils falling down around the face.

Asymmetrical necklines
Remember if you want part of your hair down, then bring the cascading curls down over the bare shoulder to balance the design.

The colour of your dress should also be taken into account, especially if you have dark hair and want to wear it out and your dress is black. Naturally you won't be able to see the hair against the black background so in this case, put the detail of your hair higher on the head.

The most important thing for your daughter, before anything else, is to be comfortable with they way she is wearing her hair.

When you go to a hairstylist they will usually ascertain whether you are:

Classic -this means a beautiful hair up that is smooth and glossy like a smooth French twist which shows off a beautiful long neck.

Casual -hair that is half up and half down or a cascade of loose large curls with the effect of not having tried too hard. This can be still very elegant and even sexy.

Avant-garde - you want to stand out with something really different or look quite trendy, or sometimes even grungy, depending on the outfit.

These categories may help your daughter decide what makes her comfortable.

A good tip for long lasting styles is to wash your hair the day before as opposed to on the day. Hair washed on the day can sometimes be too clean and slippery to hold in and can sometimes come down during the evening.

Try this website to get some ideas: www.hairboutique.com and then go into the prom hairstyle section.

I also particularly enjoy the celebrity pages that focus on the red carpet because you can see the celebrity's choice of outfit with the hairstyle.

Please wish your daughter a fantastic time from me and let me know how it went.

Michelle
