Helen MirrenFashioNZ hair guru Michelle Ogden advises on fabulous hairstyles for older women, to help you and your hair age gracefully.

There is a very small percentage of the population who look fabulous with grey hair, but most of us need some help along the way. Beware of going too far away from what Mother Nature has given you, because as you age your skin tone changes and Mother Nature always gives you the hair colour that suits your skin tone the best. If you have been dark all your life and are colouring the grey hairs, you won't notice when being that dark no longer suits you, so be guided by your colourist. In many cases adding blonde highlights to your grey areas can help camouflage them and give you a more youthful looking appearance.

Remember just because you are getting older doesn't mean that easy care and looking neat are the only things you need to worry about. You need to also be feminine and have a little sex appeal. We all worry about the old adage of 'looking like mutton dressed as lamb' but with the right care and attention you can look modern and feminine no matter your age without the risk looking like you are trying to be 16 again.

Common mistakes made are hair that is too long or hair that is too short. This tends to age people. The reason this seems to be the case is that it is not the length that is the culprit, but the lack of root lift. As we age we need root lift and body in the roots of our hair. Excessively long hair tends to make our hair appear lank, and excessively short hair doesn't have enough body for softness. Don't be afraid of trying the new short styles of the season because they have a surprising amount of length in them and this will give softness and vitality to your hair

Tips and tricks:

In most cases volume and body around the temple area brings out the eyes and lends softness to our features so try layers around this area.

Soft side sweeping fringes also add a sensual appeal without looking overly trendy but instead sophisticated.

Keep colours and tones in your hair delicate and seamless, so no longer stripes of colour but rather shimmers of tones throughout the hair to echo nature.
